Healing after sexual abuse or trauma

Sexual abuse can affect every part of a person's life—relationships, trust, self-worth, body image, and even the way you move through everyday moments.
For some, the impact is immediate.
For others, it doesn't fully surface until years later.
There is no "right" timeline for recognizing or healing from trauma.
Many survivors wonder if what happened was "bad enough" to seek help. Others have spent years minimizing their experience, blaming themselves, or believing they should be over it by now.
The truth is this: if your experiences continue to affect your life, your relationships, or the way you see yourself, you deserve a place to process the impact of the sexual abuse or trauma.
Healing doesn't mean forgetting what happened. It doesn't mean pretending it didn't matter.
Healing is about reclaiming your sense of safety, reconnecting with yourself, and discovering that your story is about far more than what was done to you.
At Tandem Counseling, we believe healing happens in the context of safe, trusting relationships. We move at your pace, honoring your story without asking you to share more than you're ready to.
Therapy isn't about forcing you to revisit painful memories before you feel prepared. It's about creating a space where you can build safety, process your experiences when the time is right, and move toward a life that feels more connected, grounded, and whole.
