Why Group Therapy will change your life!

Group of adults sitting in circle talking

I first came to group therapy as a client.

Every week, I met with my therapist and seven other women– all moms– for dedicated therapeutic support.

The experience transformed me.

What I love most about group therapy is that it mirrors how we show up in our real lives, and it offers us a place to reinforce, revise, or repair this version of ourselves. You might struggle with people pleasing, and in group therapy, you get to “try on” and receive real time feedback about how this people pleasing may be impacting others.  You may be someone who struggles to have deep friendships because of an internal script from childhood that says “I’m too much for people.” In group therapy, you can show up to this script and try on a different way of being with people.

For me, in group therapy, I found myself desperately wanting a woman in my therapy group to leave her marriage. It irked me that she was still married to a guy she didn’t seem to love.

She’s not happy, what is she doing?

I kept thinking. I brought it to group– this internalized desperation for someone else to change their life– and the therapist gently helped me understand the ways in which this internal desperation actually had way more to do with me (and my relationship to control) than it did about the other person. Wow, wow, wow.

At Tandem Counseling, we are currently running two process groups alongside my colleague and co-therapist, Teddi Bair. As a general rule, these groups are meant to supplement the work you are doing in individual counseling.

Please reach out if you are interested in this meaningful work!
